Ep. 95: Beauty & Gender Expression ft Mandy Harris Williams [Leftovers]
Femmes, tops, bottoms & gender presentation — learned so much from this few minutes of convo with the ever-fascinating artist & thinker, Mandy Harris Williams. We also get into the preoccupation with body & weight & wonder what it’s like to be freed from the thought.
You absolutely must listen to our full interview 'Deconstructing the Ideal Black Female' if you haven’t. And if you have, listen again (there are layers to the convo). Ep. 94: Grown Women Talk ft Angela Yee
This episode was surreal for me because I’ve listened to Angela Yee on the radio for over a decade. When it comes to representing hip hop and the culture, Yee has been, and continues to be one of the best radio hosts in the game. Growing up, Yee was a self-proclaimed “terror” who loved to be “out with her girls” but talking to people and giving advice was something that came naturally to her. After graduating from Wesleyan University with an English degree, Yee brought that talent to Eminem’s Shade 45 radio station. Within a few years, she landed her own morning show and in 2010 she became a part of The Breakfast Club Power 105.1 FM, a show that has facilitated some of the best conversations around music and pop culture of all time.
When Yee isn’t with her hosts Charlamagne Tha God and DJ Envy, she is hosting her own podcast, Lip Service, investing in real estate running her juice bar, & more. We talk about making time for yourself, running, juicing, how to have self-confidence & so much more. Thank you Angela for sharing your story with me.

Ep. 86: Deconstructing the "Ideal" Black Female Ft Mandy Harris Williams
Harlem-born, LA-based artist Mandy Harris Williams is thinking about beauty on a *much deeper* level. This was the intellectual beauty I conversation I've been chasing all 2019. Mandy’s ultimate aesthetic: summering on Martha’s Vineyard with a strong no-makeup skin flex. Listen to hear Mandy & I discuss the mythology behind the ‘ideal’ black woman, being ‘uglied’, fitting into cultural norms, high heels as a manifestation of the patriarchy and how we feel about white women wearing braids. We also get into:
How beauty privilege manifests itself
Hyper-pigmentation & acne scarring
Tattoos & her art career
Hair identity politics
How institutions like Jack & Jill, Trinity & Harvard can shape your self-perception
& so much more. This is one of my favorite episodes, please enjoy! And if you love it please take the time to give the show a rating & review on the Apple Podcast app. Tag me @NakedBeautyPlanet with a screenshot as you’re listening to support.

Ep. 83: “People say that I’m walking art” ft Raisa Flowers
“I work backstage and it teaches you so much. The models are getting so many photos taken of them, so you have to be perfect.” - my guest makeup artists & model, Raisa Flowers
Raisa is an icon in the beauty game and I’ve been wanting to interview her for so long! She’s done everything from hit the runway as a model for Rihanna’s most recent Savage x Fenty show to working with musicians to working at fashion week’s top shows. The NY native continuously serves some of the most eccentric looks within the beauty industry, earning her a seat on the Dazed 100, and features in publications such as Vogue and The Cut. We talk black punks, makeup brushes, family & more!
