She’s reported for publications like the NYTimes, BBC, Elle & Refinery29. Today, Nana not only works as a social media editor for NY Mag's The Cut, but also runs her own media platform called EveryStylishGirl, specifically catered to young women of color. Growing up as a first generation Ghanaian-American in Ohio, Nana often felt like an outsider. But that didn’t stop her. Ep. 107: [Leftovers] Motherhood & Creating Life ft Julee Wilson, Global Beauty Director Essence
“I thought I was a feminist before. You can’t tell me sh*t about women now. We bring whole entire lives into this world” my guest Julee Wilson on the experience of childbirth.
Join Julee, Global Beauty Director of Essence, and I on this leftover’s edition of Naked Beauty as we talk about her experience of being a Mother. It’s something I feel we don’t talk about enough so I had so many questions and Julee answered them all. We talk:
Going from life as an athlete to being a Mom.
Julee’s experience with first trimester morning sickness, the energy she gained in the second trimester and what it’s like to grow a human being inside of you.
A cup size increase can be expected but also, your feet may swell (who knew?)
Her husband being in the room during labor, the ‘husband stitch’, lactating & how she makes time for herself as a busy working Mom

Ep. 106: Mud Masks, Bridal Makeup, and Ethical Skincare Ft Lesley Thornton
Lesley Thornton’s dedication to beauty is truly next level. As a young girl, she was obsessed with making mud masks in her grandmother’s garden, checking out beauty products in LA’s Koreatown, and doing her girlfriends’ makeup for prom. For Thornton, beauty has always been, and continues to be about being both mindful and creative. And so, after working as a beauty director at Estée Lauder, and an on-air beauty expert for TLC, she decided to step out on her own. From there, Klur- a clean, ethical, and inclusive brand- was born. On this episode, I took the time to ask Lesley about ALL of her insider hacks. From makeup application to acne treatments, we’ve got the best tips and tricks for beauty, and I can’t wait for you to hear them!

Ep. 105: Jade Rolling, Manifesting & Community Ft Satchel Lee
A creative career felt pretty inevitable for Satchel. As the daughter of producer Tonya Lewis Lee and director Spike Lee, Satchel has always had a great appreciation for storytelling but she's already carving out a distinct voice of her own. And growing up in New York, there were always plenty of stories to tell. In high school, Satchel first found her creative community in an affinity group for queer kids called “The Network.” Then, as a film student at NYU, she went on to establish a black artist collective known as “Chromatic.” Today, Lee has teamed up with childhood friend Caroline D’Arcy Gorman to establish DRØME, a magazine “for those who dare”. With exclusive interviews from artists like Billie Eilish, Amandla Stenberg, and Ashton Sanders, DRØME is well on it’s way to becoming THE alternative magazine for Gen-Z. On this episode of Naked Beauty, Satchel and I talk beauty politics, intersectional feminism, dating apps, and so much more!

Ep. 104: Straight Stuntin' Ft Mandii B of Whorible Decisions
Mandii B, co-host of the Whorible Decisions podcast, is anything but predictable. Growing up, she was the girl who could shoot hoops, dress up, and kill it in her AP classes. By the time she was 18, she had entered the world of urban modelling, which began a long and ongoing journey to not just accepting her body but truly celebrating it. Mandii and I talk about how she’s coping with all of her recent success (and anxiety), being over-sexualized at a young age, her relationships and tapping into confidence, growing up mixed race, her VSG weight-loss surgery, baby hairs, half-wigs, fragrance & so much more. This is an episode you won’t forget anytime soon and please note the discussion is NSFW so enjoy this with earbuds in!

Ep. 96: You Can’t Flex On Me Luv, I’m Proud of You ft. Kimberly Drew
Over the past 7 years, writer and curator Kimberly Drew has unabashedly made a name for herself within the world of art and fashion. She’s already interviewed icons like Lupita Nyong'o, and Tina Lawson. She’s served bold looks on the runways of Chromat, and Collina Strada. Looking back on her career, Drew notes that “if I had come in with less love [for art], I wouldn’t have been as successful.”
That love first began in her hometown of Orange, New Jersey- a community that Kimberly describes as “culturally rich”. It then carried her to Smith College, where she studied African American Studies and Art History. Finally, it brought her to THE Thelma Golden (AKA “Beyonce of the art world”) at the Studio Museum in Harlem. From there, Drew went on to create the extremely successful Tumblr blog, Black Contemporary Art, which is solely dedicated to highlighting black artists and landed a dream role managing social for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, before going out to do her own thing full-time. Listen to this episode, and you’ll realize why the witty and enlightened Ms.Drew is adored by so many.

Ep. 94: Grown Women Talk ft Angela Yee
This episode was surreal for me because I’ve listened to Angela Yee on the radio for over a decade. When it comes to representing hip hop and the culture, Yee has been, and continues to be one of the best radio hosts in the game. Growing up, Yee was a self-proclaimed “terror” who loved to be “out with her girls” but talking to people and giving advice was something that came naturally to her. After graduating from Wesleyan University with an English degree, Yee brought that talent to Eminem’s Shade 45 radio station. Within a few years, she landed her own morning show and in 2010 she became a part of The Breakfast Club Power 105.1 FM, a show that has facilitated some of the best conversations around music and pop culture of all time.
When Yee isn’t with her hosts Charlamagne Tha God and DJ Envy, she is hosting her own podcast, Lip Service, investing in real estate running her juice bar, & more. We talk about making time for yourself, running, juicing, how to have self-confidence & so much more. Thank you Angela for sharing your story with me.

Ep. 93: A Mississippi Beauty Queen & PR Boss ft. Savannah Engel
If there’s one thing that PR queen Savannah Engel has mastered, it’s the art of conversation. “Throw me into a room with 300 people I don’t know,” Engel says, “give me two hours, and I will know every single person there, and be their best friend.”
You might argue that the key to such confidence lies in Savannah’s undeniable Southern charm.
Her roots in the Mississippi Delta, combined with her mother’s fashionable influence made for a keen eye and impeccable communication skills. That being said, fashion PR wasn’t always the plan. In fact, while studying at Southern Methodist University (SMU), Engel had a deep passion for refugee studies and legal work. It wasn’t until she landed an internship in New York with Michael Kors that everything changed. From there, Engel went on to work for Barney’s and First Access Entertainment. Then, in 2017, she finally founded her own firm, Savannah Engel PR. In a matter of only two years, Engel has taken on clients such as Markarian, Marlo Laz, Cult Gaia, Diesel, Missoni, and many more. All in all, she’s a boss, and she’s a force to be reckoned with.

Ep. 92: Part of Something Way Bigger ft. Akili King
If you’re wondering what the new guard of beauty editorial looks like, look no further than Akili King. The 24-year old Chicago native and NYU Gallatin graduate has published a book of her own poems (titled AWAKENING), and worked for brands like The FADER, Milk Makeup, and Fashion Fair. All that being said, her current position as the Beauty Editorial Assistant at Vogue is “still pretty surreal” because, how could it not be?! Between making a name for herself within the beauty industry, modelling, DJ-ing, and practicing yoga, Akili is undoubtedly one to watch.
